Tiny Toon Adventures: Defenders of the Universe is a fighting video game based on the Tiny Toon Adventures franchise. The game was developed by Treasure and was to be scheduled for a 2002 release on the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube, but was ultimately cancelled. A disc image of the game was released on February 25th, 2009 by a member of the Internet forum Lost Levels.
The game was going to be a successor to Treasure's 1999 fighting game Rakugaki Showtime. The prototype build of the game is fully playable from start to finish despite a few gameplay bugs and typos in the game's dialogue.
Story[]
On a planet made almost entirely out of gold located in the Jewel system, live the Bullions. They have lived there peacefully for many years, until their home was attacked by the Drizzletroopers. Two of them, Zig and Zag, manage to escape to Earth . The Leader of the Drizzletroopers learns of this and has someone go after the two. As morning on the big green planet comes by, Buster Bunny and the gang attend Acme Looniversity. However, a strange robot, disguised as Bugs Bunny, appears in their class rather than their teacher.
When his disguise is blown, the group chase after the fleeing robot. After stopping the robot from getting away, he makes an attempt to kill everyone, but ultimately fails, leaving a hole in the ground. There, zig and zag appear out of the hole, startling the group. The strange creatures explain their situation and the group agrees to help them.
However, Shirley appears telling the group a great danger will fall upon the earth if they help them. Despite her warning, the group decides to help the creatures out. They all enter the hole into the ground, leading them into yet another new adventure...

Playable Characters[]
The game consists of a total of 26 playable characters, including most of the main characters in Tiny Toon Adventures, with the exception of Calamity Coyote (who appears randomly in stages to drop a TNT or shoot machine guns that deal damage on contact, while chasing Little Beeper), Little Beeper (while fleeing Calamity Coyote and stopping in the stage center for a split second or running by to say "Beep Beep"), Gogo Dodo (who only appears during cutscenes at the beginning and end of the game, and drops weapons during gameplay), Sweetie Bird (who hatches from eggs and gives you an extra continue if you find all the special items and have enough money) and Roderick and Rhubella Rat and Li'l Sneezer (who aren't in the game at all).
Each character has different strengths and weaknesses regarding strength, stamina, speed, and their own special attack.
Buster Bunny, Babs Bunny, Plucky Duck and Hamton J. Pig are the starter characters, the rest are unlockable.
All unlockable characters (except Evil Max) are unlocked randomly by playing the Adventure Mode several times and collecting as much money as possible.
Any of the other characters besides the starter characters will skip the cutscenes during gameplay.
Buster Bunny[]
Buster's special move is a chargeable energy ball that when fully charged, does massive damage and creates a large explosion where it hits.
Babs Bunny[]
Babs' special move is a sonic scream that damage and dizzies anyone who gets in contact with its rings.
Plucky Duck[]
Plucky's special move has him automatically dodge all attacks for a few seconds.
Hamton J. Pig[]
Hamton's special move is a homing butt stomp that damages and flattens anyone it hits.
Fifi La Fume[]
Fifi's special move is called "le odour of love", which has her emit stink clouds in a circle around her, stunning all characters that get in contact with them.
Shirley the Loon[]
Shirley's special move is a lightning bolt that damages and electrocutes anyone it hits.
Furrball[]
Furrball's special move has him rise into the air and increase his speed temporarily in exchange for some of his health.
Dizzy Devil[]
Dizzy's special move is spinning fast while dealing damage and being unable to stand still for about 15 seconds. After using this move, he gets dizzy, which leaves him vulnerable for about 10 seconds.
Elmyra Duff[]
Elmyra's special is slamming another character several times into the ground, dealing heavy damage.
Montana Max[]
Montana Max's special move has him summon either metal barriers to possibly block attacks, a weight from the sky that damages and flattens enemies, a limousine from off-screen that rams enemies for damage, or fake money bombs that'll explode if an enemy collects them.
Evil Max[]
Evil Max's special move is the same as Montana Max's, but the delay for the weight and limousine attacks is quicker, and adds an additional fifth possible summon of large freeze rays that rain down from the sky.
It is impossible to unlock Evil Max legitimately since the boss fight for him only unlocks Montana Max, unless you modify your save file in a hex editor or use a cheat device to unlock him.
Maximus Flush[]
Maximus Flush's special move is the same as Buster's, though without the wind-up at the start of the attack.
Tony the Robot[]
Tony's special move has him pull out a laser gun and shoot a particle beam that creates a large explosion where it hits.
Cast[]
This game is notable as it was to mark Charlie Adler's return to voicing Buster ever since he quit Tiny Toons. It also contained a majority of the original Tiny Toons voice cast, with the exception of Don Messick who passed away in 1997. Voice acting veteran Billy West replaced Messick as Hamton.
- Charlie Adler as Buster Bunny, Zag, Tony the Robot
- Tress MacNeille as Babs Bunny, Zig
- Joe Alaskey as Plucky Duck
- Billy West as Hamton Pig, Maximus Flush
- Danny Cooksey as Montana Max, Evil Max
- Gail Matthius as Shirley the Loon
- Kath Soucie as Fifi La Fume
- Cree Summer as Elmyra
- Maurice LaMarche as Dizzy Devil
- Frank Welker as Gogo Dodo, Furrball, Little Beeper
Calamity Coyote appears, but is mute
Multiplayer[]
The game supports the multitap for four-player co-op during the Adventure Mode. Friendly fire on other players applies to the co-op mode.
There is also a Versus Mode which is a four-player deathmatch, which also supports up to four players, with CPU players replacing one of them if less than four players are playing.
The Versus Mode takes place outside Acme Looniversity. (The same place as the first area of the game.)
Allusions[]
- Maximus Flush says, "Soon all their base WILL belong to us." This is a nod to an infamous video game translation for the game Zero Wing.
- Buster also says "Somebody set us up the bomb!", which is another nod to Zero Wing's translation.
Trivia[]
- In order to play this game, you can either get a PS2 emulator such as PCSX2 on your computer to play the game, burn the game onto a disc and play it on a modchipped PS2, or with Open-PS2-Loader on a homebrewed PS2.
- In order to unlock more characters, one must have a certain number of points to be able to play multiplayer. (?)
- In 2002, a web/graphic designing company based in Stockholm, Sweden called Modesty Creative Agency created a promotional flash site for Defenders of the Universe, at www.dotu.com, which was active until the video game director Tetsuhiko Kikuchi made an announcement that the game would be cancelled; after that the website was officially closed. Before the website was shut down it was awarded by the [Favourite Website Awards].
- Before settling with Defenders of the Universe, this game has been listed under several names in alternate titles including Tiny Toon Adventures: Defenders of the Loony-verse and Tiny Toon Adventures: ACME Invasions.
