Melvin the Monster with Babs Bunny in "Hare-Raising Night"

Melvin the Monster is a minor character in Tiny Toon Adventures. He is a large, hairy monster made from various animal parts by Dr. Gene Splicer. He has the head of a bulldog, the horns of a bull, the body of an orangutan, the wings of a bat, the legs of a pig and the tail of an alligator. He was voiced by Jim Cummings.

Hare-Raising Night[]

Melvin first appears in the Season 1 episode, Hare-Raising Night. While trying to rescue the animals from Dr. Gene Splicer, Buster and Hamton stumble into Splicer's failed experiments room and get chased by Melvin. When Melvin sees Babs Bunny, he develops a crush on her. However, Babs prefers to think of him and her just as friends, as she has made it her rule not to date outside her own species. When Melvin gets captured by Splicer, Babs suggests staying behind to rescue him, much to the others' disapproval. Splicer captures Buster and his friends and attempts to dip them in his gene pool to combine them into one species, with Melvin brainwashed. As he leaves to get his camera, Babs uses Melvin's crush on her to get through to Melvin and rescue her and her friends. When Splicer returns, he tries to get Melvin back under his control, but Babs urges Melvin to resist him and help them. Torn between his new friend and his creator, Melvin turns against Splicer and knocks him into the gene pool, turning him into a rooster. Buster makes up for lying to his friends by taking them to the real Emmy Awards, where Melvin wins an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Cartoon.

Nothing to Sneeze At[]

Melvin later makes a cameo appearance in the What Makes Toons Tick episode segment, Nothing to Sneeze At where he appears as one of the closet monsters. However, he turns down the opportunity to scare Li'l Sneezer because even he is afraid of him.

Appearances in Video Games[]

Buster Busts Loose for SNES: Melvin appears in the haunted mansion level, where he is once again brainwashed by Dr. Gene Splicer. To rescue him, Buster must destroy Splicer's brainwashing machine. Here, Babs never calls him by his name, but refers to him as her friend.

Trivia[]

  • Melvin speaks mostly in grunts, roars, and the occasional woof. When Babs and Splicer argue over who he should help, he breaks character and says, "I feel so torn."
  • Although Melvin is not specifically based on a pre-existing Looney Tunes character, some fans believe he is similar to Gossamer from the Bugs Bunny cartoon, Hair Raising Hare. A similar thing can be said about Dr. Gene Splicer and Dr. Peter Lorre.
